SEPTEMBER along the 110-mile (176-km) Klondike Highway between Skagway and Whitehorse, Canada, following the 1890s Gold Rush trail. OCTOBER Alaska Day (Oct 18), across Alaska. Celebrated statewide, this day marks Russia’s handing over of Alaska to the US in 1867. Sitka has one of the largest festivals, featuring wonderful Russian costumes and dances, a parade, and a re-enactment of the flagraising ceremony. Alaska State Fair (Aug–Sep), Palmer. This extremely popular 11-day event attracts visitors from all over the state with agricultural exhibits (including gargantuan vegetables), livestock auctions, art, food and retail booths, rides, music and theater performances, lumberjack shows, and other daily events.

The resulting document was adopted the following year, and in by August 1943. During this period, a large portion 1958 President Dwight D.
